Half blocks are segments of friction material riveted onto drum brake shoes, and are a competing technology against air disc brake pads. Half blocks are generally made in leading and trailing versions and, unlike the majority of full-length linings, the thickness is tapered because of the actuation of the brake. Often, half blocks have either notches or grooves machined into the side to act as wear indicators.
